Veterans Home Residents Receive High Speed Holiday Present

MINNEAPOLIS, (PRWeb) December 21, 2006 -- Residents of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis are getting a special holiday present this week from two local organizations. The veterans are entering the Internet age thanks to Capella University (online university based in Minnesota, and Implex, a Twin Cities technology services provider.

Up to now, the only Internet access available to the residents of the Veterans Home was through an achingly slow dial-up connection in the library. Now, residents of the boarding care unit can have high speed access for their personal computers in their rooms, and on the Veterans Home's shared computers.

"The world is opening up to us," said Paul Hassing, a 42-year-old veteran of the US Army, who hopes to use the high-speed connection to pursue a business degree online at Capella.

Earlier this year, residents of the Veterans Home approached Implex CEO Stuart DeVaan, looking for a better way to connect to the Internet, because of his company's extensive broadband and wireless networking capabilities.

"When the veterans told me they couldn't get affordable, high-speed internet connectivity, I was shocked," DeVaan said. "Our troops serving in Iraq can connect faster than our vets back here at home. I knew something had to be done."

He brought the idea to Capella University, which has programs and scholarships for veterans and active duty military. Fifteen percent of Capella's undergraduate, master's and PhD students are affiliated with the armed forces. Capella agreed to underwrite the equipment, and Implex contributed the installation and ongoing technical support.

Phase one of the project involves residents of the 77-unit boarding care unit, with access to be expanded to other residents in 2007. Veterans who wish to participate pay a connection fee and $10 per month for the high-speed access.

"This partnership between Implex and Capella University will provide a wonderful opportunity for many of our residents," said Bob Wikan, Administrator of the Minnesota Veterans Home - Minneapolis. "It is a great addition to the services we already provide. We are very grateful for this generous gift."
