Cracking Up Over Your Home's Concrete Cracks? Here's Some Solid Advice From The Crack Team®

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) July 24, 2008 -- Except for perhaps black mold, a burst water pipe or the occasional critter invasion, nothing gets homeowners more worked up over their happy abode than cracks. Walls, foundations, garage floors, patios and driveways are especially high on the list because--in most people's minds, at least--concrete cracks represent an expense. A big expense.

Bob says cracks don't have to be the traumatic and costly experience people expect.

"Concrete cracks are usually nothing to worry about. Cracking is a normal and acceptable part of the curing process caused by shrinking or settling," Kodner states. "However, if moisture or water is present, if there's mold, or if the crack is getting wider, the situation should be addressed."

Check Drainage

If the crack is in the basement and water is present, the first thing to do is make sure that rainwater is not making the situation worse. "Moisture may be a sign that ground water is not draining properly. Homeowners need to make sure that gutters and downspouts are clean and free-flowing. Downspout extenders, and a yard that is sloped properly, will also keep rainwater from settling against the foundation," Kodner notes.

If the drainage system is working properly and the basement is still wet or mildewed, there is no need to fear costly repairs involving excavation around the foundation exterior. "In my opinion that's an antiquated approach. It's a rare situation where excavation is necessary. New technologies exist that allow us to easily repair cracks--even wet cracks--from the inside, quickly, permanently and for a lot less money than you'd expect."

Cutting Edge Science Meets Concrete Repair

In recent years, advanced resin compounds have been developed that can permanently seal concrete cracks. The Crack Team uses a high-pressure injection technique to force the resin into the crack; in the process, water is forced out.

Says Kodner; "Do-it-yourselfers can't duplicate our results using store-bought products. Besides, attempting to repair a crack shouldn't be considered a 'weekend warrior' project--it should be done by a trained professional." For cracks in newer homes or those that may be subject to future foundation shifting, he adds, modern resins are available that cure into a flexible, gasket-like seal.

Invisible Repairs

Cracks in high-visibility areas such as decks, patios, walkways and garage floors needn't be a problem either. While cracks may be unsightly, they rarely mean the concrete slab needs replacing. Other new materials and techniques are available that can make cracks virtually disappear.

"For garages, floors, sidewalks, and other non-decorative surfaces, we use coatings that conceal cracks and hide them very well. The coatings come in a wide variety of colors so we can match the surrounding concrete," states Kodner.

"I thought it would be a bigger deal."

With all the alternatives available today, Kodner believes there is no reason to spend huge amounts of money breaking up old concrete, pouring new garage floors, or having someone digs up the yard with a backhoe.

"I hear it all the time from people--'I thought it would be a bigger deal'," he says. "People put up with cracks for years because they are worried about the cost. For hundreds of dollars, rather than thousands, the problems caused by concrete cracks can go away forever."
