Outskirts Author's New Novel: Amid Strange New Lands, One Man Finds Home Is Where He Makes It

Set in the second half of the nineteenth century, the novel tells the story of Joseph Dular in his own words. He's young, poor, and destined for cannon fodder if he can't find a way out of his small Slovenian town before he's conscripted into one of the continent's seemingly endless military skirmishes.

So, still in his early teens, Joseph leaves the land of his birth to find refuge and freedom in another country -- wherever that might be. It's an eye-opening journey that takes the simple country carpenter's son to a brothel in Trieste, where he finds work in the kitchen; Cairo, Mogadishu and Zanzibar, as a crew member on board a rickety trading ship; and, ultimately, an exploratory safari to the inner reaches of Africa, part of the famed explorer Mary Kingsley's trek through the then-mysterious continent.

Through it all, Joseph encounters the underbelly of society at the close of the 1800s, as well as the endurance of the human spirit -- in the sex workers who ply their trade among the frequenters of the brothel, as well as those traded like cattle in the slave markets of Zanzibar -- that solidifies his core values and belief in the inherent dignity of man despite all odds.

The first in a planned three-part series, Joseph is a sprawling and meticulously researched novel, with the lavish description befitting of a dazzling world whose secrets were just beginning to be unraveled by European adventure-seekers of the time. "It is a story for those who have -- or have not, yet -- set out on their own to find what the world has to offer," Uller says. "Travel enriched Joseph.
