Simple rules to follow on how to declutter your home. The first step would be to admit that there is clutter in your home. Some people feel their possessions are not clutter. They actually believe that they need everything that is there cluttering up the home. When there is clutter, in most cases at some point many people do not even know what they have and what they don't have. When looking for an object like a roll of duct tape, and cannot find it because of the clutter, many times we will go out and buy it again which now adds to the clutter and makes the problem even worse.

To declutter your home you will need to begin in one room or one area of a room or closet. Once you concentrate on a certain area, try and stay concentrated and focused there. To move from area to area will just move the clutter around.

Preparing for declutter with several large trash bags, some cartons, labels, and markers is another rule to be followed. As you go through stuff, decisions must be made then and there as to the necessity of keeping the items or throwing them out. Consider having a garage sale to sell the items which are in good condition and make some extra money; that can be a strong motivator. Some items are too good to get rid of even though you may not have use for it. Make different piles for garbage, memory and personal items, and garage sale items.

As you go through the clutter you will begin the decluttering process even if it is slow at first. Any headway of decluttering will be your incentive to continue. It is a slow process when the clutter has been there for years or it has been brought from a previous home. The rule is to start by making a conscious effort to get rid of the items that are not being used or haven't been used for at least one year. There are groups that offer classes or decluttering meetings to help the each other since it has reached epidemic proportions. Going to one of these groups to get hands on experience is not a bad idea and then help someone who suffers from clutter to learn how to declutter their home.
