It's the Middle of the Summer -- and it's the Perfect Time to Think About Heating Your Home; GasNetworks Has Simple Solutions Now to Help Reduce Win

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 20, 2007 -- It may sound strange to say that summer is the perfect time to think about heating a home, but it is true - especially if consumers are interested in lowering winter heating costs. GasNetworks, a collaborative of natural gas utilities In New England (and the only such gas utility collaborative in the country), has some advice and conservation tips for what consumers can do now to see savings (both in dollars and energy) this coming winter.

According to Mike Sommer, Chairman of GasNetworks, if a natural gas furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old, it is probably not running efficiently compared to today's models. He recommends contacting a professional heating contractor to look at your current system now to determine if it needs to be replaced. "A new furnace or boiler can save up to 30% of your heating energy use when the temperatures drop," he points out.

If replacing the whole heating system isn't necessary, GasNetworks can help homeowners set up energy audits that will uncover areas that can be improved for efficiency. Often, the recommendations are simple, such as:

?    Sealing air leaks around doors, windows and other openings such as pipes or ducts with caulk or weather-stripping

?    Installing an ENERGY STAR programmable thermostat

?    Installing energy-saving water flow restrictors in showerheads and faucets - this will save thousands of gallons of water a year and the cost to heat that water.

What's more, GasNetworks' members offer great rebates for the installation of new, energy-efficient natural gas heating systems and other energy-saving improvements but most consumers don't even ask! Getting a rebate is simple: replace an old, inefficient boiler or furnace with a new, ENERGY STARĀ® labeled natural gas boiler or furnace and qualify for a rebate. Rebates are based on equipment type and efficiency and can be as high as $800 for a 90% efficient (AFUE) boiler. In fact, GasNetworks has given out more than $30 million in rebates in the past 10 years.

GasNetworks' members include: Bay State Gas/Northern Utilities, Berkshire Gas, KEYSPAN Energy Delivery (NE), New England Gas Company, NSTAR Gas, and Unitil. For more information, please visit www.gasnetworks.com or call 1-800-232-0672.
