Barclay Butera Home Taps Early 1900s European-Colonial Style for High Point Spring 07 Market

LOS ANGELES, CA (PRWeb) March 13, 2007 -- "Out of Africa" meets "Lawrence of Arabia" is what lifestyle designer Barclay Butera brings to High Point Market this Spring. The Barclay Butera Home space - located at IHFC Interhall H150 - will not easily be missed. Welcoming buyers into safari tents within the space, Barclay Butera Home will feature sumptuous elements influenced by these two epic films and the early 1900s European-Colonial era in which they were set.

Designer Butera has tapped the visual essence of this time and its style by employing an approach to colonial living that is casual in nature, but refined, vivid and sumptuous in fabric selection. Silks, taffetas, high-end embroidery, crewel work, and ikat are all represented. The original New York Times review of "Out of Africa" stated that "Miss (Meryl) Streep's (character) Karen, accompanied by family china, crystal and silverware, sweeps grandly into Africa…" (12/18/1985, Vincent Canby). When arriving in Africa, the Europeans intended to live as they were accustomed. Similarly, "Lawrence of Arabia" echoed the theme - and set production - of colonialism, but in Cairo and the Arabian Desert.

"In the time and places that these films represent, those who dared venture into distant lands had to work especially hard to recreate their feeling of home, and then often found themselves - sometimes reluctantly - adapting local customs and local product into their traditional lives," says Barclay Butera. "Today we are fortunate to live in a time of melting borders, where we can have easy access to anything and enjoy incorporating other cultures' ideas of style. My goal this Spring is to address that merging of ideas from a century ago that influenced so much of how we live today."

For this Spring, Barclay Butera Home is proud to present for to High Point Market:

YORKSHIRE DINING CHAIR: This classic, elegant dining chair serves as a well-scaled compliment to the host chair. Its features include a tufted, slight radius back with an alder bracket base. Shown here in Reptile Molasses. (22"w x 23"d x 38"h)

WYLAND WING CHAIR: Adapted from a true Parisian antique 19th century, its scale and pitch are updated to the American lifestyle, which is more about great-room living. A good occasional chair, it sits lower; standard includes large nailheads.
Shown here in Laundered Bristol Oyster. (30"w x 32"d x 41"h)

WHITMORE LOVE SEAT: This loveseat can stand alone as a wonderful conversation piece. Mixing feminine and masculine touches, this benchmade piece features a perfect blend of traditional English arm and bench seat, with transitional - and classic Butera - highlights as the tufting and lineal, tapered legs. Shown in Bitter Chocolate Mohair. (60"w x 34"d x 40"h)

This Market also launches a partnership between Barclay Butera and the premier art design firm Soicher-Marin. The initial theme of the line will coincide with that of Barclay's space at High Point, as it will each Market. The framed art will feature a representation of eclectic prints from the era. Says Soicher-Marin CEO Eduardo Marin, ""I'm a big fan of Barclay Butera and have looked forward to someday working closely together on a project like this. His signature style and attention to detail is a perfect fit for us."
